One of the greatest misunderstandings in the Christian life is believing that obedience to God will always make sense. Yet throughout Scripture, God often called ordinary people to do extraordinary things that seemed foolish by human standards. Abraham was asked to leave everything familiar without knowing where he was going. To the natural mind, that instruction appeared unreasonable. But to God, it was the beginning of a divine destiny.
Anyone who truly desires to experience God must become “foolish” enough to obey Him. Faith is not demonstrated when the path is obvious—it is revealed when we trust God’s voice above our own understanding. Every new season that God brings into our lives is usually preceded by an instruction. Before there is promotion, there is obedience. Before there is breakthrough, there is surrender.
Many believers desire change, yet resist the very instructions that produce it. We often pray for new seasons while clinging to old comforts. However, comfort is one of the greatest enemies of spiritual growth. Remaining where life feels safe may preserve convenience, but it often prevents transformation. God is committed to our growth more than our comfort.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly disrupted the ordinary in order to accomplish the extraordinary. Jesus challenged traditions, exposed religious mindsets, and invited people into a completely different way of living. Many rejected Him because His message disrupted everything they had become comfortable with. God’s disruptions are never designed to destroy us, they are designed to develop us. He does not interrupt our lives to punish us, but to preserve His purpose within us.
Like Abraham, believers must remain ready for God’s next instruction. The voice that called Abraham will not necessarily call us in the same way. God deals with each believer personally. His instructions are unique because His purpose for every life is unique. What matters is not whether the instruction resembles someone else’s journey, but whether we are willing to obey what He is saying to us.
Sadly, many believers hear sermons without hearing God’s personal instruction. Church attendance alone does not produce transformation. Transformation comes when we hear God’s voice and respond with obedience. It is possible to become so governed by the flesh that every instruction from God is met with excuses, delay, or regret. Yet those who cultivate sensitivity to God’s voice position themselves for His next move.
Hearing God is essential, but hearing alone is incomplete. Obedience is what makes faith visible. Faith is never merely what we say we believe, it is revealed by how we respond when God speaks.
What Does Obedience Require?
1. Expect Opposition
Not everyone will understand the instructions God gives you. Even well-meaning people may advise you against obeying because they evaluate your situation through natural wisdom rather than spiritual discernment. Learn to value God’s voice above public opinion.
2. Embrace Sacrifice
Obedience always costs something. It may require letting go of comfort, security, relationships, finances, or personal ambitions. Every sacrifice made in obedience becomes an investment in God’s greater purpose.
3. Learn to Recognize God’s Voice
God speaks in many ways—through His Word, the Holy Spirit, godly counsel, circumstances, and spiritual convictions. As we spend time in His presence, we become more familiar with His leading. God desires to lead His children personally.
4. Obedience Builds Trust
God entrusts greater responsibility to those who have proven faithful with smaller instructions. Every act of obedience prepares us for greater assignments in His Kingdom. Those He can instruct are often those He can trust.
5. Faith Is Proven Through Obedience
God’s instructions frequently test whether we trust Him more than our own understanding. Every instruction creates an opportunity to choose faith over fear.
6. Obedience Must Become a Lifestyle
Following God is not a once-off decision but a daily commitment. Every day presents opportunities to surrender our will and align ourselves with His.
7. Miracles Follow Obedience
Throughout Scripture, miracles often occurred after someone obeyed God’s instruction. Whether it was Noah building the ark, Israel marching around Jericho, or Peter casting his net again, obedience created room for God to display His power.

True faith is more than agreement with biblical truth. Genuine faith responds with action. When we obey God, we demonstrate that we trust His character, even when we do not understand His methods.

God is still looking for men and women who are willing to trust Him beyond what is logical or comfortable. Like Abraham, we are invited to leave behind the familiar and follow wherever God leads. His instructions may seem foolish to the world, but they are always filled with divine wisdom. Every act of obedience becomes another step toward the purpose He has prepared for our lives.
