Topic: WHEN GOD IS FIRST (Part 3)

Text: “Do what God’s teaching says; do not just listen and do nothing. When you only sit and listen, you are fooling yourselves.” — James‬ 1‬:22‬, ICB‬‬.‬‬‬‬

In one of his teaching moments, after some very strong words, Jesus noted that there are two kinds of people.

The first are those who hear the word and commit to doing it, and the second are those who hear the word but have no commitment to obey what they hear.

Jesus noted that the former is wise and the latter is foolish. Interestingly, one would have assumed that hearing the word alone should be counted as a great advantage, but Jesus says if you only hear but refuse to obey, then you are not wise.

In Matthew 6:33, our Lord Jesus says to us that the thing we should want most is God’s kingdom and doing what God wants. He says when we commit to doing this, then everything else we need, God will bless us with them.

How does this work? Put the things that honour the Lord first. Refuse to compete or argue with the will of God. Yield yourself to the Holy Spirit to conquer selfishness. Ensure that God’s honour and joy are your priority. Live in the fear of God and exalt the wisdom of God above the carnal logic of the flesh, and when you do this, you will be empowered with wisdom and favour to access everything else you need to live an amazing life according to God’s will.

So, we are not just to keep hearing these words of Jesus or to write them down alone; we are to ensure we maintain a firm commitment to obey them; this reveals where we place God in our lives.

I want to remind us of today’s Bible text. It is James 1:22 (ICB). It says, “Do what God’s teaching says; do not just listen and do nothing. When you only sit and listen, you are fooling yourselves.”

Commit to God that you will put things that honour Him first.
