Topic: THE MIND OF LEADERSHIP (Part 4)

Text: “God has chosen you and made you His holy people. He loves you. So always do these things: show mercy to others; be kind, humble, gentle and patient.” – Colossians 3:12, ICB.

God’s word tells us in Philippians 2:6-8 that Christ was like God in everything. He was equal to God. But he did not think being equal to God was something to be held on to. He gave up his place with God and made himself nothing.

He was born as a man and became a servant. And when he was living as a man, he humbled himself and was fully obedient to God. He obeyed even when that caused his death—death on a cross.

Jesus was an excellent example of a leader. He didn’t need titles or labels to have an impact. He concentrated on his vision and mission. He never allowed anyone to distract him from these.

A person’s character and discipline, rather than their title, determine who they are as leaders. Labelling anyone as a leader is easy, but true leaders serve as role models. Leadership is primarily about action and example.

We see an inspiring example of leadership in Jesus Christ and his interactions with his disciples. There were incredible displays of humility, but they never stopped calling him master and teacher because they recognised he had earned it.

It’s interesting to note that some people wait for the title “leader” before feeling like one.

Leadership is more about the person than the title. Indeed, if you are not a leader, the title will not make you one.

You may not be the top person in your organisation, the supervisor, or even a manager, but how you conduct yourself and interact with others distinguishes you as a true leader.

Let us learn from Jesus that you don’t need a title or a robe to feel and behave like a leader.

Wherever you are and whatever you are assigned to do, be determined to excel, deliver excellence at all times, find a way to get along with others you work with, foster collaborative efforts and unity among others, and set an example of what you want to see in others. These are the inspiring characteristics of great leaders.

Identify five leaders who have impressed you with their selflessness and contributions.
